Most Popular Diamond Shapes
This seems to be the winning question. I like to start with, his/her preference. Have you discussed the shape or viewed anything in person? If so, go for her requested shape if she has a preference.
If you are just starting out and this will be a total surprise, here are a few tips to help get you started:
- Round Diamonds: This is the most ideal brilliant cut available in the market. Being the oldest, most perfected cut; you are sure to get amazing sparkle and brilliance. You can check certifications, as well as light performance evaluations to really ensure a beautiful diamond.
- Cushion Cut Diamonds: These impressive diamonds seem to be making a comeback. They are cut in many different ways as there is no real industry standard for this shape. You can get more of a square shape (with rounded corners) or a rectangular shaped (with rounded corners) cushion. You also need to choose between big bold flashes of light return or more the crushed ice/shattered glass look.
- Princess Cut Diamonds: An ideal princess cut diamond should be a square. Rectangular princess cuts are not what is ideal in the market. Princess cuts, just like the cushions can be tricky. There are a lot of factors that go into making a princess cut sparkle and shine. Just like the cushion cuts, GIA does not give a cut grade for princess cuts. The only (creditable) lab that provides a cut grade for princess cut diamonds is the AGS. There are many beautiful princess cut diamonds but, you must be sure you are maximizing the brilliance and sparkle factor.
- Oval Cut Diamonds: Oval cuts have been trying to break the barrier. They seem to be becoming more and more popular. Fancy shaped diamonds, such as the oval, can be harder to find with guaranteed brilliance. You must be sure to have someone who is evaluating the cut properly to ensure sparkle and scintillation. Oval cuts are offered in two shapes. You can go with the shorter squatier shape or the longer thinner oval. A length to wide ratio of about 1.3-1.5 would be the industry standard in which most consumers prefer.
The above are just a few of the more popular selling shapes. Don’t forget your emerald, marquise, radiant, asscher, pear, heart, etc. If you have a special request or more questions, feel free to contact me directly. I am more than happy to help you locate the perfect shaped diamond for your soon to be!
